Melanie C Reveals Why Diana Ross’s “Work That Body” Was Key to “Sweat”

Speaking at Vevo Studios, the Spice Girls icon explained how the video draws inspiration from decades of fitness and dance culture, blending iconic references from Flashdance to Eric Prydz’s “Call On Me.” The visuals, filmed in Sydney and directed by Graham Cruz, place Melanie C in a warehouse setting where she leads an intense aerobics routine while wearing high heels, leaning fully into the contrast between glamour and physical exertion.
Melanie C revealed that Diana Ross’s 1982 single “Work That Body” played a central role in shaping both the song and its visuals, describing how the track kept looping in her head during the writing process. She also cited an Arnold Schwarzenegger workout album from the 1980s as an influence, noting its over-the-top fitness commands and theatrical approach to exercise.
The video is packed with playful nods for longtime fans, including the appearance of four male dancers dubbed the “Spice Boys,” whose outfits and styling reference the original Spice Girls personas. Melanie C said the moments of humor and nostalgia were intentional, designed to reward fans who have followed her career from the beginning.
Beyond the visual jokes, she described “Sweat” as a celebration of movement as emotional release, comparing the rush of working up a sweat on the dance floor to the energy of DJing in a room full of people. For Melanie C, the video represents a return to her “Sporty” roots while embracing the joy and community that come from shared physical experiences.
Reflecting on her Flashdance-inspired finale, she summed it up simply, asking, “What girl who grew up in the ’80s doesn’t want to have that moment?”

0:07 - Shooting the video for Sweat was so much fun, I took all the Flashdance moments, even Eric Prydz “Call on Me,” we wanted the iconic sporting music moments throughout the last few decades.
0:40 - Diana Ross’ “Work that Body” kept going around in my head and I thought it would be so cool in a new song if I could get that into a tune.
0:57 - We were also listening to Arnold Schwarzenegger, he created an album in the 80's with loads of classic tunes with workouts over the top. We threw it all together and “Sweat” was born.
1:30 - I’m on a spin bike in heels and I have my little Spice Boys which are for the fans. We’ve got a red head, a blonde and they all have little speedos on if you haven't seen the video it’s worth it for that alone.
2:11 - I love working out, but you can not beat working up a sweat on the dance floor. I love to be behind the decks but behind the decks or in front, I'm happy to be sweating in a room full of people having the same experience.
2:52 - I really love my Flashdance moment in the video - what girl that grew up in the 80’s doesn’t want to have that moment.
