Seattle-based indie-folk cellist, vocalist, and songwriter Ollella brought her unique sound to NPR’s Tiny Desk today, performing a set that has already left fans raving online. Trained as a classical cellist since the age of nine, Ollella blends her technical string expertise with commanding vocals and live-looping to create music that feels both intimate and expansive.

Her Tiny Desk performance celebrates years of participating in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest, where she was a finalist in 2022 and 2024. Speaking about the experience, Ollella said, "Tiny Desk flips the usual power dynamic of live instrumentation. Rather than amplifying the cello to compete with the electric instruments, the electric instruments turn down to meet the acoustic cello. That intimacy changes everything."

Fans responded enthusiastically to her performance online. One YouTube viewer wrote, "Don’t think I’ve ever seen a band with a cellist lead singer. Fascinating stuff!" Another said, "Ethereal, kind, and gentle. Thank you!" and a third added, "That was a wonderful music set, so calm and peaceful. That is needed in the turbulent times we are in."

Other viewers praised the combination of technical skill and emotional depth. "I try to watch the Tiny Desks with people I have never heard of, and I am so happy I tuned into this one. Absolutely sublime!" one fan commented. Another wrote, "Wow! The lyrics, the cello, the music so beautiful! Biggest fan!!"

Ollella has earned recognition from critics and fellow musicians alike. Bob Boilen of NPR’s All Songs Considered called her music "really outstanding," while Michelle Zauner, also known as Japanese Breakfast, praised it as "so tastefully done." Her sound blends acoustic and contemporary elements, mixing folk with pop, and balancing tenacity with softness, drawing inspiration from artists such as Feist, Cat Power, and Sylvan Esso.

Her sophomore album, Antifragile, released in March 2025, received critical acclaim for its maturity and sonic breadth. Produced in collaboration with Jordan Cunningham, the album also features drummer Sean Lane, known for his work with Heart and Perfume Genius, and horn arrangements by William de Koch of Fleet Foxes and The Westerlies.

Ollella will perform live in Seattle this February. More information and tickets are available online.
