“Damaged Goods” by Confidence Man: A Sonic Loop You Won’t Want to Escape

I love discovering new artists, especially when they sound awesome. Confidence Man's latest release sounds great. I can feel the Daft Punk influence, but with even more power. Damaged Goods feels like moving forward without a care in the world. Let’s dive into the song.

The rhythm pushes everything ahead, with bass and drums that feel never ending. When the vocals come in, they nudge the track forward a little more, and the same goes for the synths. This song feels like being stuck in the best loading screen possible. It is repetitive in a really good way and moves in a hypnotising manner. I am not exactly sure what type of bass we are hearing. My best guess is a Moog bass layered with something else. Moog is my absolute favorite bass sound.

I would describe this track as very smooth, strictly speaking about the sound. There are no harsh tones, no sharp attacks, nothing that demands your direct attention. I think that adds to the hypnotic feeling. Someone who does not make music or pay close attention might hear something like this and say, “Big deal, it is just the same drum loop and vocals repeated over and over.” I think that could not be further from the truth. The rhythm does its job by being repetitive, but you cannot make a strong track like this with rhythm alone. If you listen closely, you will hear many layers of synths and sounds soaring above the beat. These layers form endless combinations and give the song just enough unpredictability. You cannot rely only on repetitive elements to make a good repetitive track.

I'm going to be paying close attention to Confidence Man. This music really helped me focus on the task at hand, which happened to be writing this exact text. I suggest you go and give Damaged Goods a listen below.
