Review: KAYTRANADA Reinvents Nostalgia on ‘SPACE INVADER’

KAYTRANADA returns with a new single, “SPACE INVADER,” a track that reaffirms his status as one of electronic music’s most distinctive voices. As a longtime fan, I’m always excited when he drops something new. His music is consistently full of interesting sounds, rhythms, and vocal chops—sometimes danceable, sometimes funky—but always unmistakably KAYTRANADA.

Right from the start, “SPACE INVADER” carries a touch of the ’80s with its Linn drum and hazy vocal samples. Then the punch of the kick drum shifts the vibe, while moog basslines and 90s rave-inspired synths keep the retro arcade feel alive. The result is a track that feels both nostalgic and modern, perfectly capturing the Space Invaders aesthetic. The mixing is tight, and the crispness of every sound makes it feel fresh and polished.

KAYTRANADA often handles nearly everything himself—production, songwriting, and mixing—which I’ve always admired. Plenty of artists excel at one or two of those, but doing all three with such finesse is another level entirely. Recently, he’s been spotted with artists like PinkPantheress, and I think they share common ground: both are largely self-made, create most of their work solo, and sit just outside the mainstream. Honestly, imagining a world where KAYTRANADA was fully mainstream is fascinating.

It’s hard to pin down exactly how his music makes me feel. It’s not quite joy, not quite raw energy—more like a cool, driving force that’s uniquely his. Whatever it is, it’s addictive, and “SPACE INVADER” is another example of why he continues to stand out. Do yourself a favor and give it a listen.
