Amy Macdonald Says “I’m Done” — New Single Marks a Confident Step Forward for the Scottish Star

Amy Macdonald is on a roll. Fresh from the news that her new record Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? debuted at No. 8 in the UK charts — making it her sixth consecutive Top 10 album — the Scottish singer-songwriter is keeping her momentum alive with the release of her new single, “I’m Done (Games That You Play)”.
The track, already a fan favourite from the album, has been hailed online as one of her finest yet. “One of the very best and accomplished singer-songwriters to exist in my lifetime! Love all you do Amy,” wrote one fan on YouTube. Another added, “Amy, the album version is fire, but this is the whole firestorm.”
Propelled by a bright, acoustic pop-rock melody and Macdonald’s unmistakably emotive vocals, “I’m Done (Games That You Play)” feels both personal and universal. Its soaring chorus and relatable message turn heartbreak and frustration into empowerment, proving once again why Macdonald’s songwriting continues to resonate with audiences across generations.
While the lyrics — “And you said I’ll never ever leave you / And you said I’m always gonna need you / And I said I’m never ever gonna stay / With the games that you play” — cut straight to the core, the song is far from a lament. Instead, it’s a declaration of strength and self-assurance.
Speaking about the single, Amy explained:
“‘I’m Done’ is ultimately a song about life and friendships and having to make hard decisions; sometimes you just have to walk away. It was written on the first day I met Nico [Rebscher] — it was strange for me because I’d never written with anyone I didn’t actually know before. Thankfully Nico immediately put me at ease, he was so chilled and had such great musical ideas that the lyrics just came to me.”
Rebscher, known for his work with Alice Merton, co-wrote and produced the track alongside Amy, while the album also features contributions from Grammy-winning producer Jim Abbiss (Adele, Arctic Monkeys).
It’s a continuation of the approach Amy discussed back in a 2020 interview, when she told us:
“I like catchy songs, that’s what I always try and do. I like things that kind of grab hold of my attention, and I like upbeat music, the kind of stuff you really want to tap your feet to. And that’s what I’ve focused on with my own music.”
That instinct is paying off. Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? was recently crowned Radio 2’s Album of the Week, and its success has fueled massive demand for Macdonald’s upcoming UK and European tour — much of which is already sold out. Two homecoming shows at Glasgow’s OVO Hydro will see her perform to a combined audience of 28,000 fans.
Macdonald’s year doesn’t stop there. She’s also celebrating the 15th anniversary of her beloved second album A Curious Thing with a new expanded reissue, set for release on National Album Day, October 18th. The limited edition will include the original album on pink vinyl and a second transparent disc featuring orchestral versions recorded with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Orchestra.
With over a billion streams, 12 million album sales, and 12 Platinum certifications worldwide, Amy Macdonald has long since proven her staying power. Yet with “I’m Done (Games That You Play)”, she sounds more confident and creatively alive than ever — a reminder that even when she’s closing one chapter, she’s always ready to begin the next.
