Jacob Collier Opens the Door to His Earliest Creative Years on In My Room 10th Anniversary Release

A decade after In My Room transformed Jacob Collier from a YouTube phenomenon into one of music's most celebrated innovators, the multi-Grammy-winning artist is returning to where it all began.

To mark the 10th anniversary of his debut album, Collier will release In My Room (10 Year Anniversary Edition) on July 1 via Fontana/Hajanga, offering fans an unusually personal look at the recordings, experiments and ideas that shaped his breakthrough.

The expanded collection pairs the original 2016 album with a second disc of previously unreleased material, including demos, voice memos, live recordings and newly recorded performances. While anniversary editions often revisit familiar territory, Collier's latest release aims to reveal the creative process behind an album that launched one of contemporary music's most distinctive careers.

Recorded entirely by Collier in the music room of his family's North London home, In My Room arrived shortly after his viral YouTube videos caught the attention of audiences around the world and legendary producer Quincy Jones, who famously described the young musician as a once-in-a-lifetime talent.

The album showcased Collier's extraordinary ability to write, arrange, perform and produce every element of his music himself. It also earned him his first two Grammy Awards, establishing a foundation for a career that would later encompass the ambitious Djesse series, arena tours and collaborations with artists ranging from Coldplay and SZA to Joni Mitchell and Stormzy.

The anniversary edition shifts the spotlight away from those achievements and back to the formative years before global recognition. Among its highlights is a previously unheard 3:30 a.m. voice memo that captures the earliest musical ideas that would become "Hideaway," one of the album's most celebrated tracks.

The collection also includes early recordings of standards such as "But Not For Me" and "Georgia On My Mind," alongside a newly recorded piano interpretation of the title track.

Perhaps the most striking addition is "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes," a newly created recording that sees Collier performing alongside a recording of himself at 13 years old.

"These little recordings were my building blocks as a young artist," Collier said. "My very first experimental sketches of worlds and songs, made right when I was figuring out what kind of artist I wanted to be."

He described the archive material as his "workings," the creative sketches and experiments that helped define his musical identity.

"I can't think of anything I've released to the world that feels more personal," he added.

The set also captures a pivotal moment from the year of the album's original release with a live recording of "In The Real Early Morning" from Quincy Jones' BBC Proms concert at London's Royal Albert Hall in 2016, a performance that introduced Collier to a wider international audience.

Ten years on, Collier's career has expanded far beyond the four walls of the room where In My Room was made. He has won seven Grammy Awards, collaborated with more than 100 artists, developed his signature audience choir performances and become a leading advocate for music education and communal singing.

Yet the anniversary release suggests that even after sold-out arenas and global acclaim, Collier remains fascinated by the unfinished ideas and creative experiments that started it all.

The deluxe edition will be available digitally and as a special 2LP zoetrope vinyl release from July 1. Collier is also planning a series of anniversary events in London, with further details expected in the coming weeks.

For an artist known for constantly pushing forward, In My Room (10 Year Anniversary Edition) offers a rare opportunity to look back, tracing the path from a North London bedroom studio to one of the most remarkable musical careers of the past decade.
