Backstreet Boys member Howie D is stepping into a new musical chapter with the release of “Coquí,” the first single from his upcoming Spanish-language project, as fans praise the track and say Latin music “best fits his voice.”

While preparing for the next leg of the Backstreet Boys’ sold-out Sphere residency in Las Vegas, Howard Dorough is also focusing on a deeply personal solo direction inspired by his Puerto Rican heritage. The new single marks the beginning of a broader project that sees him exploring Spanish-language music alongside reimagined versions of songs from across his career.

Named after the iconic Puerto Rican tree frog known for its distinctive nighttime call, “Coquí” is described as a feel-good summer anthem blending Latin rhythms, tropical textures and playful energy. The track introduces a different side of Howie D, who has spent the past year developing the project as a way of reconnecting with his cultural roots.

Born to a Puerto Rican mother, the singer has spoken about how music, language and tradition were central to his upbringing. He has also said that becoming a father has deepened his desire to embrace and pass on that heritage, using the project as a personal bridge between generations.

“Growing up, Puerto Rican music, traditions, and family were always a huge part of my life,” he said. “As I’ve gotten older and become a father myself, I’ve felt an even stronger desire to connect with that heritage and share it with my children. This project has allowed me to reconnect with that side of myself in a really meaningful way.”

The release follows his appearance at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City, where he took part in celebrations honouring Puerto Rican culture, music and community.

Alongside the music itself, fan reaction has been swift, with listeners praising the direction and sound of the single. Comments on social media have highlighted how naturally the style suits him, with one fan writing, “I’m now understanding that Latin music best fits Howie’s voice. It really works,” while another said they “can’t believe we are getting this hit en español.”

The response reflects growing excitement around the project, with many fans welcoming the shift in direction as a natural evolution for the Backstreet Boys star, who has spent more than three decades performing on global stages and selling over 130 million records worldwide with the group.

“Coquí” is the first release from a larger Spanish-language project that will also include reworked versions of select Backstreet Boys-era material in Spanish, as Howie D continues exploring his identity through music that bridges both his global pop career and his Puerto Rican roots.
