Sting Turns the Rijksmuseum Into a Concert Venue for New Live Release

Sting has released a new live album, The Night Watch: Live at the Rijksmuseum, recorded inside the Rijksmuseum, positioning the project as both a concert recording and an exploration of how music and visual art intersect.

The 12-track album captures a performance staged inside the museum’s Gallery of Honor and library, with Sting accompanied by longtime guitarist Dominic Miller. The set draws from across his catalogue, including songs from his work with The Police, solo material, and selections from The Last Ship. The release follows a televised ARTE special in the Sounds Like Art series, which documented the performance in the museum setting.

The concept behind the album is rooted in Sting’s interest in the relationship between songs and paintings, particularly how both forms reward attention over time. In his own words:

“The longer you look at a painting, the more you discover in it. It's the same with a song – the more often you hear it, the more you understand it.”

That idea is central to the framing of the album, which places Sting’s performance among works by Dutch masters including Rembrandt, whose use of light and shadow is echoed in the album’s emphasis on intimacy and restraint.

Recorded while parts of the museum’s collection, including Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, were undergoing restoration, the performance was staged in spaces not typically used for concerts. The setting contributes to the album’s atmosphere, with the natural acoustics of the museum shaping the sound of the recording.

The Night Watch: Live at the Rijksmuseum is produced by Martin Kierszenbaum and is available now on CD, vinyl, and streaming platforms. It serves as both a live document and a conceptual piece that connects classical art spaces with contemporary songwriting.
