Ella Mai’s fiery ‘Might Just’ video pays tribute to Waiting to Exhale while fans compare it to Left Eye’s iconic revenge moment
Ella Mai is giving heartbreak a cinematic makeover, and fans cannot stop talking about the explosive ending of her latest music video.
The Grammy-winning R&B star has released the official visual for "Might Just," and viewers are already calling it one of her most powerful videos yet. Inspired by the 1995 classic Waiting to Exhale, the video transforms betrayal into an unforgettable story of female rage, healing, and friendship.
One fan summed up the dramatic finale by writing, "She did a Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes. Burn that ish down," while another praised the emotional themes, commenting, "The feminine rage + girlhood in this mv is top tierr."
Directed by Alfred Marroquin, the visual opens with Ella quietly going about everyday life inside her home. But it soon becomes clear that something is wrong as she begins imagining her partner cheating with another woman. Whether the scenes are real or imagined is left deliberately unclear, adding to the growing tension.
Eventually, that heartbreak reaches its limit. Ella tears through her partner's clothes, burns photographs, and, in the video's most striking moment, sets the house on fire alongside a group of supportive friends. The closing shot sees her sitting alone in her car, calmly smoking a cigarette as the flames burn behind her.
The ending instantly reminded many viewers of one of the most memorable scenes in Waiting to Exhale, while others drew comparisons to the late TLC star Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, whose real-life act of setting fire to her then-boyfriend's mansion became one of pop culture's most infamous moments.
The tribute to Waiting to Exhale runs throughout the video, with appearances from sports broadcaster Taylor Rooks and singers Coco Jones and Ryan Destiny. Together, they bring the film's themes of resilience, friendship, and moving on into a modern setting.
The release arrives during another busy year for Ella Mai. She recently performed across South Africa, Asia, and Australia, including festival appearances in Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, and Sydney. She also heads into awards season with BET Award nominations for Female R&B/Pop Artist and Video of the Year for "100."
Next month, Ella will hit the road for the North American leg of her Do You Still Love Me? Tour, which begins on July 2 in Milwaukee. The 28-date run includes stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Boston, and concludes with her debut headline performance at New York City's Radio City Music Hall on August 28.
