Nickelback's heavy new single has fans declaring: 'We are so Nickel-BACK'
Nickelback have returned with one of their heaviest songs in years, and longtime fans are already celebrating what many see as a welcome return to the band's heavier roots.
The Canadian rock veterans have released "Rattle The Cage", the lead single from their upcoming 11th studio album, Everything Under The Sun, due for release on October 30.
Featuring a guest appearance from guitarist John 5, the track trades the band's radio-friendly rock sound for crushing riffs, pounding drums and one of Chad Kroeger's grittiest vocal performances in recent memory.
For years, Nickelback have been the subject of jokes that painted them as the definitive mainstream radio rock band. While hits such as "Photograph" and "Far Away" helped shape that perception, longtime fans have often pointed to heavier tracks like "Side of a Bullet", "This Means War" and "Because of You" as evidence the band has always had a much heavier side.
Judging by the early reaction online, "Rattle The Cage" is reminding plenty of listeners of exactly that.
One fan wrote on YouTube: "Oh we are so Nickel-BACK."
Another commented: "Back to the heavy roots, perfect."
A third simply declared: "Ah yes its the MetalKroeger again."
Built around metallic guitar riffs, aggressive drumming from Daniel Adair and a relentless pace, "Rattle The Cage" embraces an alternative metal and hard rock sound that recalls some of the band's most uncompromising material. John 5's blistering guitar work adds another layer of intensity to what is one of Nickelback's loudest and fastest recent releases.
Speaking about the new album, frontman Chad Kroeger said: "This album has every side of the band on it. There are songs that hit as hard as anything we've ever done, songs that take chances, and songs that remind us why we've been doing this together for so long.
'Rattle The Cage' felt like the perfect way to kick the door open. It has the energy we've been feeding off every night on stage, and we can't wait for people to hear it."
Everything Under The Sun marks Nickelback's first studio album since 2022's Get Rollin' and their first release through Virgin Music Group.
The album arrives following a resurgence for the band, with their Hate to Love: Nickelback documentary finding a new audience and the Get Rollin' World Tour becoming the fastest-selling and highest-attended tour of their career.
If "Rattle The Cage" is any indication, Nickelback are opening this new chapter by leaning into the heavier side of their sound, and judging by the early fan response, many listeners are more than ready for it.
