Seasick Steve is reflecting on the changing face of America and the idea of the American Dream on his new single "Bootstraps," a blues-driven track from his forthcoming album The Last Season of America.

The song explores class mobility and the challenges facing those trying to build a better life, inspired by Steve’s own experiences and observations during a 2024 road trip across the United States. Travelling from Miami to Los Angeles with his wife Elisabeth, Steve witnessed the impact of growing poverty, homelessness, and division across the country, experiences that would go on to shape the themes of his new album.

"We drove across the country from Miami to LA," Steve recalls. "We thought we was gonna have an amazing time but we were mostly sad, so much homelessness and division."

The release arrives 20 years after the moment that transformed Steve’s own life story. In 2006, his unforgettable appearance on BBC’s Jools Holland’s Hootenanny introduced his raw, stripped-back blues sound to millions of viewers, with his performance of "Dog House Boogie" on a battered three-string guitar and homemade stomp box capturing the attention of music fans around the world.

Since then, Steve’s unlikely rise from a travelling musician and self-described "professional busker" to an internationally recognised artist has become one of modern music’s most remarkable stories. He has gone on to sell more than two million records, perform at Glastonbury Festival five times, and build a career defined by resilience, reinvention, and a deep connection to the blues.

"Bootstraps" sees Steve turn that lifelong journey into a wider reflection on opportunity, inequality, and whether the same paths to success still exist for future generations. Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Martin Terefe, the track previews The Last Season of America, an album that combines protest songs and personal reflections while ultimately holding on to a sense of hope for the future.
