The Fratellis are set to headline a major new live music event at Blackpool Winter Gardens this summer as part of the inaugural Blackpool Live series.

The Scottish indie-rock favourites will bring their raucous live show to the iconic venue on Friday, August 21, with support from Birmingham indie favourites The Twang, as well as rising acts The Lilacs and The Cheap Thrills.

The announcement adds another major name to the Blackpool Live line-up, which will see some of the UK's best-known guitar bands take to the Winter Gardens across seven headline events this summer.

More than 27 artists are due to perform across the series, with a combined capacity of 17,500. Other acts announced so far include Feeder, The Enemy, Cast, Doves, The Pigeon Detectives and Happy Mondays.

The Fratellis shot to fame with their 2006 debut album Costello Music, which produced some of their biggest and most recognisable songs, including Chelsea Dagger, Whistle for the Choir and Henrietta.

Almost two decades after their debut, the band remain a major force on the UK indie circuit. Earlier this year, they returned to the road to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Costello Music, bringing the record's much-loved tracks back to live audiences.

They will now bring those festival-ready anthems to Blackpool as part of the new live music series.

The Fratellis will be joined on the bill by The Twang, who emerged from Birmingham in the mid-2000s and scored a UK Top 10 hit with Either Way.

Their debut album, Love It When I Feel Like This, reached number three in the UK album charts and has since achieved platinum status.

The Lilacs and The Cheap Thrills will also perform, giving the event a mix of established names and emerging artists.

Blackpool Live is being launched as a new series of live music events at the Winter Gardens, with organisers aiming to bring major acts and emerging talent to one of Britain's best-known entertainment venues.

The series is also being promoted as a reason for visitors to make a full day of their trip to Blackpool, with fans encouraged to combine the concerts with the town's beaches, attractions, bars and restaurants.

The Winter Gardens has a long history of hosting major names in music, with artists including Jimi Hendrix and The Stone Roses having previously performed at the venue.

Blackpool Live founder Mark Lippmann said the idea was inspired by a trip he made to the town with 15 friends in 2006 to see Arctic Monkeys at the Empress Ballroom.

The group arrived before lunch, spent the afternoon at Pleasure Beach, explored the seafront and arcades, had fish and chips and beers, and then headed to the gig before catching the last train home.

He said the experience was one of the reasons behind creating Blackpool Live, with the aim of giving a new generation of music fans the chance to create similar memories.

The Fratellis, The Twang, The Lilacs and The Cheap Thrills will perform at Blackpool Winter Gardens on Friday, August 21.
