“The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station”: CMAT Channels Existential Angst (and a Krauty Groove) into the Most Chaotic Anti-Diss Track of the Year

We’ve been shouting about CMAT since way back in 2020 — when her cowboy boots, karaoke drama, and laser-sharp lyrics first started turning the heads of anyone who craved more brains in their bangers. Fast-forward five years, and Ireland’s most flamboyantly fragile pop-country philosopher is gearing up for her third album EURO-COUNTRY (out August 29 via AWAL Recordings), and she’s just dropped the best-titled track of the year: “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station.”

And no, it’s not exactly a diss track. As CMAT herself puts it, “It’s actually a love song for Jamie Oliver” — a tongue-in-cheek way of framing a deeper self-reckoning. Beneath the surreal title is a track about recognising how knee-jerk hatred and petty grudges don’t serve anyone — least of all yourself.

Built on a woozy, stomping indie-kraut groove with all the camp and charm we’ve come to expect, “The Jamie Oliver Petrol Station” is another high-concept heart attack wrapped in shimmering absurdity. There’s something about CMAT’s songwriting that feels like eavesdropping on a therapy session in a motorway bathroom, and we mean that as the highest compliment.

It follows the viral success of “Take A Sexy Picture Of Me” — a song that spawned “The Woke Macarena”, melted TikTok, and got Julia Fox and Amelia Dimoldenberg doing coordinated “leg tings” in their living rooms. That track marked something of a breakthrough moment for CMAT’s reach, but this new single proves she’s still very much operating on her own wavelength: combining steel-edged existential honesty with genre-defying soundscapes and a deeply Irish sense of humour.

Next week, she takes on Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage (Friday, June 27, 1:30pm BST), a surreal full-circle moment for fans who’ve been following her rise since the early Bandcamp days. (We were there. We remember.)

EURO-COUNTRY, recorded in New York with longtime collaborator Oli Deakin, promises to tackle heavy themes — grief, economics, identity, and the cost of being Very Online and Emotionally Available™. But if “Jamie Oliver Petrol Station” is any clue, it’ll also be witty, weird, and completely unlike anything else in your New Music Friday.
