Reading Festival is no stranger to unforgettable moments, but today’s mainstage surprise might just go down as one of the wildest in recent memory. British indie stalwarts The Kooks lit up the crowd with a career-spanning set before inviting an unexpected guest to join them: Hollywood star Rebel Wilson.

The Pitch Perfect actress stunned fans when she walked on stage to rapturous cheers, joking that she was ready to sing a “classic Kooks song” before launching into Coolio’s iconic 1995 hit Gangsta’s Paradise. Backed by the band, Wilson delivered a word-perfect rap performance, while frontman Luke Pritchard joined in on the soaring chorus, the crowd echoing every line.

“We’re huge fans of Rebel,” Pritchard explained afterwards. “She got in touch saying she wanted to come watch us. Immediately I invited her to join us on stage. We thought she’d pick one of our songs, but she said the only lyrics she knows start to finish are Gangsta’s Paradise—so that’s what we played.”

The set already had fans euphoric, packed with beloved tracks like Ooh La, Seaside, and She Moves in Her Own Way. But the surprise collaboration with Wilson—introduced tongue-in-cheek as her “popstar alter ego” Tazzie Young—turned the performance into instant festival legend.
For Wilson, whose career spans comedy blockbusters (Bridesmaids, The Hustle) and the acclaimed Jojo Rabbit, the Reading cameo adds another unexpected twist to her résumé. For The Kooks, the moment underscores their enduring ability to reinvent and connect with new audiences nearly two decades after their breakout debut, Inside In/Inside Out.

This year marks the band’s third Reading & Leeds appearance, coming on the heels of their seventh studio album, Never/Know, which debuted in the UK Top 5 in May—their highest charting record since 2008. The Kooks are set to continue their momentum with an arena tour this autumn, including a headline date at London’s O2 Arena on October 11.
