Matt Maeson and Manchester Orchestra Deliver a Raw, Reflective Anthem with “Cursive”

Virginia-born singer-songwriter Matt Maeson has released his long-anticipated third studio album, A Quiet and Harmless Living, out now via Atlantic Records. The multiplatinum artist—known for alt-rock anthems like “Cringe” and “Hallucinogenics”—channels the seismic changes in his personal life into a raw, reflective collection of songs that feel both intimate and arena-ready.
The 11-track record was born out of a season of upheaval: Maeson got married, relocated from Austin to Nashville, and became a father for the first time. “It was very healing to write this,” Maeson said in a press statement. “I was going through a lot. A Quiet and Harmless Living is about deconstruction and figuring out who I am now as a person in a completely different season.”
Among the standout moments on the album is “Cursive,” a soaring collaboration with Manchester Orchestra frontman Andy Hull. Maeson, who first discovered the band as a teenager, called working with Hull “a surreal honor.” Hull returned the admiration, saying, “I’m a sincere fan of my friend Matt and his thoughtful writing… Creating this song together was as fluid and organic as it gets.”
Fans are already embracing the pairing, flooding YouTube with comments like:
“Nothing better than quite literally my top two artists collaborating together. Matt and Manchester NEVER miss.”
“Matt’s music has pulled me through all my self-destructive thoughts these past 6 years. Always hits just right.”
The album’s sonic palette blends plaintive piano melodies with distortion-drenched guitar hooks, a result of late-night writing sessions and close collaboration with producer Owen Lewis. Tracks like “Everlasting” wrestle with resilience (“Grit your teeth and make us proud”), while “Downstairs” slips between hushed confession and a crashing chorus.
To celebrate the release, Maeson has announced a massive 42-date tour spanning North America and Europe/UK. The trek kicks off September 26 in Dallas and includes stops at iconic venues like The Wiltern in Los Angeles, Brooklyn Steel in New York, and London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire. VIP packages—featuring signed posters, exclusive merch, and early entry—are already on sale.
A Quiet and Harmless Living marks Maeson’s first studio effort since his 2024 live album, That’s My Cue: A Solo Experience. Despite the growing pressures of fatherhood and a demanding industry, Maeson says the new record reflects a shift in perspective: “My career could fail, but I’d still have the best thing in the world: my son. It gave me the ability to be brutally truthful.”
For longtime listeners and new fans alike, Maeson’s latest work offers a poignant reminder of why his music resonates so deeply: it’s heartfelt, unflinching, and—as the title suggests—quietly powerful.
