Soulful North London Duo GeeJay Unveil New Single ‘Murder’

Sometimes, the best musical partnerships happen by accident. For soul-pop duo GeeJay, it was a simple scheduling error at Haringey’s Music & Beans café in 2016 that brought vocalist Gina Jane and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jay Lobo together. Both were working on separate projects, yet that one misprinted rota meant they ended up on the same shift—and the rest is history.
Late-night jam sessions in the café’s back practice room quickly turned into early-morning songwriting marathons. Their first impromptu recordings captured a spark neither expected, and soon the pair realized they had something special. That spark grew into independently released tracks like ‘Stronger’ and ‘Ordinary Girl’, amassing over 25 million streams, and ultimately led to their debut album What’s The Sun Without The Rain?, praised by The Guardian as “a charming debut, promising soulful joy for the future.”
Now, GeeJay return with ‘Murder’, a new single that flows effortlessly across soul, funk, and pop. Gina Jane’s blissful vocals and Jay Lobo’s jazzy, funk-infused production come together to create a song that’s both beautiful and poignant. Lyrically, it’s a plea for peace, reflecting on humanity’s repeated cycles of violence.
“It’s sad that we feel a need to make a song like this,” says Gina Jane. “In a world where humans claim to be so civilized and evolved, it’s pretty contrary to see that we can still be so barbaric.”
Their live shows continue to grow in scale, from sold-out performances at the Jazz Café and The Lower Third to their upcoming headline at London’s Islington Assembly Hall with a full live band. And as they work toward their second album, fans can expect more of the genre-blending, soulful music that first drew the duo together in that accidental shift at a café.
It’s sad that we feel a need to make a song like this.
