Psychedelic Grooves and Bold New Moves: The Charlatans Are Back

“It kicks in with a sense of immediacy. It’s Altered States meets Pincher Martin,” frontman Tim Burgess explained. “The Hammond organ leads the way and hands you over to the irresistible and relentless bassline – a sense of giving in to what surrounds you. Sometimes it’s where you should be going. But you only get the answer once you can’t turn back.”
"Deeper and Deeper" follows the summer release of We Are Love’s title track, an uplifting, propulsive anthem that set the tone for the album. Guitarist Mark Collins called it a turning point in the creative process: “Early on, we thought it felt right. And it turned out that way: first single, title track, second song on the album. And things started forming around ‘We Are Love.’”
The new record marks the band’s first in eight years, their longest gap between albums. That pause was shaped by pandemic disruptions, solo projects, and the geographical distance between members. But The Charlatans UK—Burgess, Martin Blunt (bass), Collins (guitar), Tony Rogers (keyboards), and Pete Salisbury (drums)—returned with an impressive lineup of collaborators, including Dev Hynes (Blood Orange), Fred Macpherson (Spector), and legendary producer Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, The Cranberries).
Recording sessions took place at Rockfield Studios in Wales and the band’s own Big Mushroom space in Cheshire. Their return to Rockfield carried emotional weight: the band had not worked there since the making of 1997’s Tellin’ Stories, when keyboardist Rob Collins died in a car accident near the studio. “The whole idea of hauntology and psychogeography is represented by us going back to Rockfield, where so much history has happened for The Charlatans,” said Burgess. “That was important as a way of honoring every member who's played in the band. So we’re honouring ourselves, our past, feeling that energy and reincarnating it, doing something fresh, brand new.”
Spanning 11 tracks, We Are Love reflects on the band’s past while embracing a forward-looking spirit. The album arrives as The Charlatans UK continue a career that spans over three decades, 13 previous albums, and era-defining singles including "The Only One I Know," "North Country Boy," and "One to Another."
To celebrate the release, the band will head out on a UK headline tour this December, with dates in Leeds, Stoke, Bath, London, Manchester, and Glasgow.
