Fred Again.. has released another Stutter House banger, “Solo,” featuring the vocalist Blanco. Fred is incredibly good at making drums, but something people don’t mention as often is how strong his vocal chops are too.

On a track like this, listeners might not think of the vocals as sampled, because the phrases sound more like someone actually recorded them rather than a typical sample track. But if you think about it, all the vocal phrases are repeated, probably because Fred recorded Blanco and then sampled his voice. This really shows how versatile vocals can be. You can start with a simple vocal melody and turn it into whatever you want. Another cool thing about Fred’s style of vocal sampling is that he is essentially “playing” the vocals on his sample pad, giving him full control over how the vocalist is ultimately presented.

I recently saw Fred live, and he gave the crowd a lot of energy. I know this track will fit perfectly into a live set. I feel like Fred has really found his style. He makes new music that feels fresh, but if you have heard him before, you will instantly know when a track is his. I wonder how this feels for the artist, because maybe they would prefer to always be as unpredictable as possible. I think it is a huge achievement when you have such a clear musical personality that people recognize your songs right away. Some listeners don’t care who made a song, only whether it’s good. I enjoy learning about the artists behind the music, but in most cases, I think it’s the song itself that matters.

Anyway, it’s hard to dislike Fred. He works hard to make uplifting EDM tracks and sometimes ambient tracks that give people energy and make their lives better. His music is great for driving, studying, partying at a live show, working out, or almost any other situation. The only scenario where I think Fred’s music wouldn’t quite fit is a mellow, sophisticated pre dinner gathering. But I think he would be fine with that. Go and give Solo a spin!
