Yungblud and The Smashing Pumpkins Unite on a Dark, Powerful Reimagining of “Zombie”

Yungblud has opened the new year by making rock history, teaming up with The Smashing Pumpkins on a reimagined version of his GRAMMY nominated song “Zombie.” The collaboration marks the first time in the legendary band’s career that they have appeared on another artist’s recording, a milestone that feels as symbolic as it is powerful.

Originally released to widespread acclaim, “Zombie” is already Yungblud’s fastest streaming solo single, surpassing 100 million streams. This new version elevates the song into something darker, heavier, and more cinematic, blending Yungblud’s raw, emotional urgency with The Smashing Pumpkins’ unmistakable alternative rock DNA. One fan summed up the reaction simply: “That’s a collab we didn’t know we needed that worked out perfectly.”

The track stays faithful to the emotional core of the original. Yungblud opens the song with the familiar first verse and chorus, before Billy Corgan steps in on the second verse, his instantly recognizable voice adding gravity and texture. The guitars feel thicker and more layered, the atmosphere more intense, and the sense of urgency sharper. The result is a version of “Zombie” that feels both intimate and expansive, as if the song has grown up alongside its creator.

Lyrically, “Zombie” remains deeply personal, written about the trauma and isolation of watching a loved one suffer. With the shared vocal performance, those themes hit even harder, creating a dialogue across generations of alternative rock. The Smashing Pumpkins were a key influence on Yungblud’s album Idols, and this collaboration feels like a bridge between eras rather than a simple feature.

The story behind the collaboration adds another layer of meaning. Yungblud and Billy Corgan first met last July in Birmingham during Black Sabbath’s farewell concert, where both artists paid tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. Their connection, however, goes back years. Corgan first discovered Yungblud through a live performance video and immediately saw something special. In a 2023 interview, he predicted that Yungblud was an artist people would be talking about for decades. More recently, he compared Yungblud’s evolution to that of Elton John, praise that deeply resonated and helped push Yungblud toward making the rock album he had always envisioned.

That full circle moment led Yungblud to reach out directly and ask Corgan to help reimagine “Zombie.” The result is a collaboration that feels personal rather than performative, with The Smashing Pumpkins lending their voice and sound in service of the song’s emotional truth.

The release arrives alongside an official music video directed by Charlie Sarsfield, starring Yungblud and The Smashing Pumpkins together on screen. It also sets the tone for a massive year ahead, as Yungblud prepares to launch his sold out UK arena tour this spring, beginning April 11.

The new version of “Zombie” follows a landmark year for Yungblud, which included a GRAMMY nomination for Best Rock Album for Idols, a sold out world tour, and a widely praised tribute to Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath that earned him a Best Rock Performance nomination. He also scored a Top 10 debut on the Billboard 200 with One More Time, his collaborative EP with Aerosmith, and continues to sell out tours across North America and the UK.

Speaking about the collaboration, Yungblud called it a dream come true, citing Siamese Dream as a formative album in his life and describing Corgan as both an inspiration and a mentor. He said “Zombie” is the most important song on Idols to him and praised the new version for being heavier, more urgent, and emotionally devastating in the best way.

Billy Corgan echoed the mutual respect, saying it was a joy to lend The Smashing Pumpkins’ “zig zag voice” to a song inspired by their work and to make the rendition as personal as possible in return.

With this release, Yungblud continues to prove that modern rock does not have to choose between past and future. By standing shoulder to shoulder with one of alternative rock’s most influential bands, he reinforces his place as a defining voice of his generation while honoring the artists who shaped him along the way.

“Yungblud, The Smashing Pumpkins – Zombie” is available everywhere now.
