Katie Tupper has released her new single “Safe Ground,” the final preview ahead of her debut album Greyhound, due out January 21. The track serves as a heartfelt promise to a best friend, grounding the emotional core of the album just before it's revealed in full.

“Safe Ground” opens simply, beginning with a softly picked acoustic chords that sound like a nylon string guitar. Tupper’s voice enters gently, immediately taking centre stage. The song unfolds at a steady pace, supported by a subtle drumbeat that never overpowers its intimacy. As it closes, the arrangement strips back once more, ending on piano that mirror the way the guitar first appeared on its own.

There is a spacious quality to the production, built on gentle echoes, distant drums, and breathy backing vocals. Against that backdrop, Tupper’s vocal delivery and guitar feel immediate and close, carrying a quiet but steady emotional weight. Harmonies move in and out with intention, giving the track space to open up.

Listeners have already connected deeply with the song. One YouTube commenter wrote, “One of my favorite voices on the planet. Can’t wait for the album!” Another shared, “I was STARVING for the full version of this, and this was the perfect way to start 2026!”

Lyrically, “Safe Ground” is built around devotion and reassurance. Tupper sings about feeling more at ease in motion and in the city, while acknowledging the weight and vulnerability of relying on someone else. The recurring promise to be a “safe shore” and a “safe ground” underscores the song’s theme of unconditional support.

Speaking about the track, Tupper explains, “This is my platonic love song. I wrote it to my best friend about how lucky I feel to know her. It is my promise to her to always be a safe spot for her to land.”

Often compared to artists like Olivia Dean and Charlotte Day Wilson, Tupper’s smoky alto blends soul, indie, alternative R&B, and a subtle touch of folk. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, her debut album Greyhound connects the prairie roots of her upbringing with the broader worldview she has developed through years of travel and growth.

Tupper has also shared insight into the album’s title and central metaphor. She explains that racing greyhounds chase a decoy that is designed to remain just out of reach, pushing them to run faster without ever arriving. This idea resonated deeply with her own experiences. “I am often both the Greyhound and the decoy,” she says. “Chasing something unreachable and being the thing that cannot be caught.”

Before releasing her debut full length record, Tupper has already amassed over 22 million streams worldwide and earned a JUNO Award nomination for Traditional R&B and Soul Recording of the Year. She has sold out shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago ahead of her official US debut, with more dates on the way.

Greyhound will be released on January 21 via Arts & Crafts. The album was produced by Tupper’s touring partners and frequent collaborators Justice Der and Felix Fox of BADBADNOTGOOD. Confessional in nature, the record reflects on lessons learned, relationships, and the things we choose to leave behind.

At its heart, Greyhound is an album about love in its many forms, romantic, platonic, and tied to a sense of place. It carries the feeling of late night conversations with a close friend, honest reflection, and emotional clarity, all while embracing the wide open skies of Saskatchewan alongside the city streets Tupper has come to call home.
