Soft 2 Shows LANY at Their Most Polished and Emotional Yet

Multi-platinum alt-pop band LANY has released Soft 2, the expanded version of their widely acclaimed 2025 record Soft. The new edition adds five powerful tracks, including the emotional centerpiece “When Did You Stop Loving Me?”, which was debuted at The GRAMMY Museum earlier this month, accompanied by a newly released official live video.
Produced once again with Tommy King, Soft 2 highlights LANY at their most refined and intentional yet. Each track is co-written by frontman Paul Klein, whose signature heartfelt lyricism anchors the record. The extended album is split into two discs. Disc 2 opens with the reflective and sonically shifting “I’m Doing Alright” and moves into the fluttery, lovestruck piano ballad “Prettiest Thing I’ve Ever Seen.” It then transitions into the 90s R&B-infused “How To Hold An Angel,” followed by the tender exploration of heartbreak in “When Did You Stop Loving Me?” and concludes with the heart-aching ballad “Finish Me,” which finds Klein yearning for a love that truly lasts.
Musically, Soft 2 balances vulnerability and strength. The production blends live instrumentation with electronic synth textures and drum machine patterns, creating a sound that is both polished and emotionally immediate. Klein described the album as capturing the tension between hardening in the face of the world while choosing to remain tender at the core, resulting in what he calls LANY’s most magnetic and fully realized record to date.
Variety praised the band’s evolution, noting, “The Los Angeles-bred band, fronted by Paul Klein, has spent the last decade evolving from dreamy alt-pop to expansive pop-rock.” Earmilk observed, “LANY pushes its sound forward into new musical ventures,” while Melodic Magazine added, “Soft transforms heavy pain into something weirdly beautiful.” The Tennessean highlighted the familiar elements fans love, writing, “Soft has everything fans have come to expect from LANY: sparkling synths, highly-polished productions, Klein’s romantic, bright pop vocals, and percussion that ranges from dancey to atmospheric.”
YouTube fans have been quick to draw comparisons between “When Did You Stop Loving Me?” and The 1975’s “Robbers.” Listening closely, the main similarity appears to be in the intro and beat, while the rest of the song is quite different. One fan remarked, “No comparing LANY to The 1975 as they always bring the same vibe. This one indeed got The 1975 vibey with an original LANY recipe. So yeah. Freakin love it.”
Soft 2 is available now on all streaming platforms. The expanded edition demonstrates LANY’s ability to honour their alt-pop roots while exploring new emotional and sonic territory, offering fans a record that is both nostalgic and strikingly new.
