Dan + Shay Preview Upcoming Album With Acoustic-Led “Young”
Dan + Shay are stepping into a reflective new era with “Young,” the title track from their newly announced sixth studio album of the same name, due August 21. The gentle acoustic ballad arrives alongside news that the three-time GRAMMY-winning duo are preparing what they describe as their “most personal album yet,” one shaped by family, faith, and the realities of growing older after more than a decade at the top of country music.
Built around delicate acoustic picking, “Young” leans into restraint rather than arena-sized production. Soft percussion drifts in around the 45-second mark, while subtle lap steel textures gradually widen the song’s emotional pull. Dan + Shay’s trademark harmonies sit front and centre in the chorus, carrying the song’s bittersweet message with warmth and clarity.
Lyrically, the track reflects on youthful invincibility and the way time quietly slips away. Lines like “Young man thinks that he’s gonna live forever” and “Someday, you’re gonna see an old man in the mirror” land with a mix of nostalgia and hard-earned perspective. Rather than sounding cynical, the song feels comforting, almost like advice passed down from one generation to the next.
Fans have already connected deeply with the track and its music video. One viewer wrote, “Best part of this video is Shay’s son being in it 🥹,” while another praised the song’s understated beauty, commenting, “This melody is so beautiful.” A third summed up the emotional response many listeners seem to be having: “Who else is cutting onions in the middle of the night? 🙋”
That emotional honesty appears to be the driving force behind the upcoming album. In a statement announcing Young, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney shared: “Young is by far our most personal album yet, and we are beyond excited for our fans to hear it. Every song is inspired by a true story, and gives a real-time snapshot of exactly where we are in our lives.”
The release follows their recent single “Say So,” a deeply personal song centred around suicide prevention that has been climbing country radio charts and sparked widespread conversation for its message and self-directed music video from Smyers.
Coming off the success of Bigger Houses and years of crossover dominance, Dan + Shay could easily continue chasing polished radio hits. Instead, “Young” feels intentionally quieter and more intimate. It trades spectacle for sincerity, allowing the duo’s songwriting and harmonies to carry the weight. If the rest of the album follows this path, Young may end up being not only their most personal project, but also one of their strongest.
