Willow Avalon And Kaitlin Butts Deliver Dark Country Magic On ‘Hypothetically Speaking’

Willow Avalon is quickly carving out her own lane in country music and “Hypothetically Speaking” might be the sharpest example yet of why so many people are paying attention. Featuring fellow outlaw-country firebrand Kaitlin Butts, the new single leans hard into dark humour, old-school storytelling and vintage Southern attitude, sounding like something that could have been pulled from a smoky jukebox in 1965 and somehow still feel completely fresh in 2026.

Built around a murder-ballad style narrative, the song opens with a frantic phone call after an abusive husband named Carl ends up dead on the kitchen floor following an argument involving a cast iron skillet. From there, Avalon and Butts spiral into increasingly outrageous “hypothetical” ways to dispose of the body, from feeding him to alligators to dissolving him in acid barrels, all delivered with a wink, a grin and enough sass to keep the whole thing entertaining rather than sinister.

What really makes the track work is the chemistry between Avalon and Butts. Their conversational back-and-forth feels natural and theatrical at the same time, almost like listening to two lifelong friends gossiping on a porch somewhere deep in the South. Avalon’s smoky drawl carries much of the track’s bite, while Butts brings an extra spark of chaos and humour whenever she cuts in. One listener summed it up perfectly online, writing: “Willow and Kaitlin have such old-school country vibes to 'em and I can't get enough of it. Exactly what modern country is missing these days!”

Musically, “Hypothetically Speaking” fully embraces classic country traditions. Twanging guitars, punchy percussion and a swaggering retro groove give the song a cinematic feel that recalls the great outlaw duets of decades past. There is a touch of Dolly Parton storytelling in the writing, a little bit of Loretta Lynn attitude and even flashes of The Chicks-style dark comedy, but Avalon still sounds entirely like herself.

The music video has also attracted attention for its cinematic retro style, built around a dramatic phone conversation between Avalon and Butts using vintage telephone sets. Fans have particularly praised the visuals, with one viewer commenting: “This music video is amazing! The use of the split diopter shots elevated this thing to new levels!” Others were equally drawn to Avalon’s distinctive vocals, with another fan writing: “Anyone else enamored with Willow's voice?”

The release arrives ahead of Avalon’s upcoming sophomore album Pink Pocket Pistol, due June 26 via Atlantic Outpost/Assemble Sound. Based on the singles released so far, the project looks set to deepen the vintage country aesthetic she has been steadily refining over the past year. Avalon herself has described the album as darker, moodier and heavily inspired by the sound of 1960s country music, and “Hypothetically Speaking” certainly delivers on that promise.

The Georgia-born singer has rapidly become one of country music’s most talked-about rising stars following the success of Southern Belle Raisin’ Hell earlier this year, a record praised for its sharp songwriting and rebellious personality. She has already shared stages with names like Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan and Zach Bryan, while appearances at Stagecoach, CMA Fest and the Grand Ole Opry have helped introduce her to an even wider audience.

One YouTube commenter perhaps captured the feeling surrounding Avalon best with the line: “Earl's legacy lives on even if Earl himself does not.” It is an obvious nod to The Chicks’ legendary revenge anthem “Goodbye Earl”, but it also highlights exactly why “Hypothetically Speaking” connects so strongly. The song understands the rich history of country storytelling while adding enough personality, wit and style to make it feel brand new all over again.
