DRY CLEANING has released a new track called "Grass." The song is one of the new additions to the deluxe edition of Secret Love, and it instantly made me think of the Canadian duo Angine de Poitrine. I love that this weird strain of music seems to keep spreading, evolving, and finding new audiences.

This song feels like Talking Heads after a long, drunken night at the bar. The sounds, the vocal delivery, the melodies, and the rhythms all come together to create this strange, hazy atmosphere. It feels like stumbling down a dark road after a night out, never quite sure where you are heading. I especially love the moments of clarity, when the song suddenly opens up after wandering through the darkness for a while. Even though the track never completely clicked with me, I really appreciated the mood it creates.

The vocals sit right at the front of the mix and almost sound like an audiobook woven into a song. They are theatrical, but they carry a surprising amount of emotion and give the music a completely unique identity. Beneath them, the instrumentation is fairly traditional, with drums, bass, and synths making up most of the sound. The standout elements are the chorus and the reverb-soaked guitars, which drift between the background and foreground, giving the whole thing a groggy, dreamlike quality.

I have not listened to DRY CLEANING in a while, but "Grass" presents an interesting glimpse of what might be coming next. It may not end up being one of my favourites from the band, but I can definitely appreciate what they were going for.
