OneRepublic have returned with a new track, 'Pay That Toll', delivering the kind of upbeat, driving sound that feels made for a summer road trip, while hiding a more cautionary message beneath its anthemic production.

The song blends pop rock and alternative rock with folk and indie-pop influences, opening with rhythmic acoustic guitar before layered electric guitars help build towards its large, energetic chorus.

Thick background vocals give the track the familiar wall-of-sound quality associated with OneRepublic, adding to its uplifting feel and making the song easy to imagine playing with the windows down on a long drive.

But while 'Pay That Toll' sounds carefree on the surface, its lyrics take a more reflective approach.

The song explores the consequences of moving too fast, taking risks and assuming there will always be more time.

"Yeah, you can go fast, fast as hell, but push it too hard, you're gonna wreck yourself," Ryan Tedder sings, before returning to the song's central warning: "Someday you're gonna pay that toll."

The lyrics also draw on familiar imagery of gambling and chasing money, with references to putting it "on black", ringing the bell and throwing a coin into a wishing well.

At the heart of the song is a piece of advice from the narrator's mother, who tells him: "Boy, you should go slow, been burning up and down that road."

That gives 'Pay That Toll' a message that is considerably more reflective than its bright, energetic sound initially suggests.

The contrast appears to be working with fans, who have been quick to praise the band's latest release.

One longtime OneRepublic fan wrote: "It's more than 10 years I'm OneRepublic fan and every time you guys release a song, I feel like I'm 15 again and it's the best day of my life."

Another fan simply described it as "Another Banger by OneRepublic."

For listeners who come to OneRepublic for their big, uplifting choruses, 'Pay That Toll' delivers exactly that. But underneath the acoustic guitars, driving rhythm and soaring group vocals is a reminder to slow down before the consequences catch up.

It may sound like the perfect summer anthem, but 'Pay That Toll' is ultimately about recognising that every shortcut, risk and decision can come with a price.
