Holly Humberstone Gets Dangerously Catchy on ‘Too Cute To Be Lonely
Holly Humberstone has released a new song called "Too Cute To Be Lonely", and this is probably the most instantly catchy track of the bunch.
The song is full-on synth-pop. There are bright electronic sounds, programmed drums and this very simple but effective groove underneath Holly's vocals. Apparently, she was inspired by artists like ABBA, Madonna and Robyn when making the track, and I can definitely hear all three of those influences in different places.
Robyn especially.
The whole thing has that really fun combination where the production sounds incredibly happy while the lyrics are actually coming from insecurity. The song is basically about being at a party, wanting somebody to go home with you, and trying to convince yourself that there is absolutely no possibility you are spending the night alone.
Very confident.
Until suddenly it is not.
Holly's vocals work really well here because she has this slightly conversational way of singing. It never sounds like she is trying too hard to perform. It feels more like somebody telling you what happened the previous night and slightly regretting half of it.
I also really like the synth section towards the end. It gives the track a little moment where the production gets to take over instead of simply repeating the chorus again. Little details like that are what make simple pop songs more interesting to me.
Some listeners seem to think this is one of her catchiest tracks, while others prefer the darker and more emotional side of her music. I can understand that. This song is definitely not trying to be the deepest thing she has ever released.
But I do think there is an art to making a really good pop song.
It is very easy to make something catchy. It is much harder to make something catchy without it becoming annoying after five listens.
"Too Cute To Be Lonely" manages that pretty well. It is fun, colourful and easy to digest. Put this on before going out somewhere and I would be surprised if the chorus is not still stuck in your head a few hours later.
