Angèle, Caroline Polachek and SebastiAn Make Pop Magic on ‘Love Triangle’
Angèle has teamed up with Caroline Polachek and SebastiAn on a new track called "Love Triangle", and this thing sounds absolutely massive.
The production immediately caught my attention. There is this constantly moving electronic arpeggio underneath the vocals that gives the entire song a really restless feeling. SebastiAn handled the main production, and I can definitely hear that French electronic influence. It reminds me slightly of artists like Justice or some of the older Ed Banger stuff, although this is obviously much more pop-focused.
The whole song feels glamorous and slightly chaotic.
Angèle and Caroline Polachek also sound fantastic together. Caroline sings partly in French here, and her vocals have this really unusual quality where they can sound incredibly soft one second and almost theatrical the next. Angèle's voice is smoother, so the contrast between them works really well.
The song is about exactly what the title suggests. A love triangle. Apparently, Angèle got the original idea after overhearing people discussing one at a dinner in Brussels, which I think is quite funny. Sometimes you sit down trying to write something for hours and nothing happens, and then somebody else's disastrous relationship gives you an entire song.
I especially like the way the production never really settles down. Even during the softer vocal sections, there is always something moving underneath everything. It gives the song this feeling of tension, which obviously fits the subject matter really well.
The chorus is also just extremely catchy. With somebody like Caroline Polachek involved, I almost expected the track to go completely off the rails and become super experimental, but they have managed to keep the stranger sounds wrapped around a very straightforward pop song.
Doing some research, this track will appear on Angèle's upcoming album Instinct, which apparently also includes work with Justice and Soulwax. That definitely explains some of the electronic direction we are hearing here, and I am very curious to hear what the full album sounds like.
"Love Triangle" is catchy, dramatic and ridiculously well produced. It feels like music for walking into a nightclub while pretending you have your entire life together. Definitely worth a listen.
