Review: HAIM’s “Relationships” Captures the Beauty and Exhaustion of Love

The indie rock trio HAIM has just released a new song titled “Relationships.” The track has an innocent, nostalgic feel that reminds me a bit of an old John Mayer love song—not a specific one, but more in the way HAIM phrases their melodies. As a longtime listener, I think this song is a great representation of the band. HAIM often experiments with sounds, song structures, and vocal melodies, yet they always manage to make their music feel familiar and inviting.

One of HAIM’s greatest strengths is their ability to balance experimentation with accessibility. Take “3 AM”—one of my favorite tracks from them—which features Thundercat and is an absolute melodic masterpiece. That song makes me feel like I’m floating away toward heaven with no way to stop it. “Relationships” feels much lighter than that, but that’s not a bad thing. A band can’t have every song carry the same weight; otherwise, things would get boring too quickly.

The music video for “Relationships” visually captures the cyclical nature of dating—going to the club, meeting someone, moving in, moving out, and then repeating the process all over again. The song itself reflects that idea perfectly. Not every song has to be about being wonderfully in love; sometimes, relationships are just exhausting, and this track seems to embrace that reality.

HAIM has been delivering music I love for a long time, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. Their track record is too solid. So, if you haven’t yet, go listen to “Relationships.” And while you’re at it, you might as well dive into the rest of their discography—you won’t be disappointed.

Great review. I have listened to this song on repeat for.a week. And you hit the nail on the head, it's the way they phrase their verse melodies. It has so much humanity, it has John Mayer's "Your Body Is A Wonderland" pathos.
