Mic On, Mood Set: Alex Isley Delivers Again

Following my review of Addison Rae’s “Headphones On,” I’m now turning to Alex Isley and her latest release, “Mic On.” Not to take anything away from either of those tracks, but I guess this week artists really want us to turn things on and put stuff on.
Alex Isley has put out some truly great songs—especially if you’re into soul and RnB. My personal favorites are “Good & Plenty” and “Too Bad I Forget.” Both tracks have brought me so much happiness. Her newest release, “Mic On,” feels murky, deceitful, and groovy in the best way. I won’t dive too deep into lyrical analysis here, but based on the song and the vibe of the music video, it definitely gives love drama. Honestly, after watching the video, I can totally imagine this track in a movie scene.
This is the kind of song I could have on repeat all day. There’s something mesmerizing about the smooth vocals layered over that drum and bass groove. The production is super simple, and to be honest, I could barely hear the song over my clacking keyboard—but somehow, I still knew it was high quality. It’s funny how a song can be that subtle and still completely take over your attention. The groove is just that strong.
After hearing “Mic On,” I’ve decided to listen to Alex’s new album “HAVING” all the way through. I know that sounds like a line ripped straight from a press release, but it’s the truth. I really am going to listen to it and see where it takes me. Every now and then, I rediscover an artist I haven’t thought about in a while and remember just how ridiculously good they are. There’s so much talent out there—and Alex Isley definitely deserves to be on a lot more playlists. Go give her a listen!
