Spanning 35 years of recording, Bruce Springsteen surprises us with a new batch of unreleased tracks

For years, fans—and Bruce himself—have whispered about the existence of unreleased material. Hopes ran especially high after the first installment of Tracks in 1988, which featured a staggering 66 songs: B-sides, alternate takes, and long-shelved recordings. Thirty-five years later, Tracks II has finally arrived, and it’s even bigger, boasting 82 tracks. But this time, the difference is striking—not just scattered outtakes, but entire unreleased albums finally seeing the light of day.

Here, we hear Springsteen in all his forms. From the transitional folk-rock that marked the evolution of his generation to his most experimental edges, Tracks II feels like a sprawling self-portrait. Some songs likely never saw release due to their sensitive subject matter. Ciudad Juarez, for instance, places the listener in the shoes of a grieving father whose daughter has vanished in the infamous border city. Seven Tears, more elusive, seems to navigate themes of loss and personal reckoning with an ambiguous touch.

Still, the heart of the collection remains classic Springsteen: songs about chasing dreams, working-class struggle, and musicalized anecdotes that read like a series of casual short films set to music.

In recent interviews, Springsteen hinted that Tracks III is already in motion and may well be the final chapter in his archive of unreleased material. Alongside this upcoming album, he mentioned he will release new work “that is different from anything I’ve written before.” As for the nature of this material, he described it as esoteric, recounting his experiences with Catholicism.

If you’re curious, further information about the albums is available here.
