Review: The Black Keys Shift Gears with “On Repeat”

The Black Keys have just released a new track called “On Repeat” — and yes, I’ve already taken the title literally. I’ve had it looping just to see if something hidden clicks into place.
The Black Keys have been close to my heart for a long time. I think I started listening to them as a teenager, around the same time I was getting into bands like Arctic Monkeys. They sit in a similar space for me — though I don’t listen to this genre obsessively, so I’m sure others could make better comparisons.
“On Repeat” feels much milder compared to some of their earlier work — and honestly, I kind of like that. The sound leans a bit toward Khruangbin or Glass Animals, especially in the background guitar and synth riffs. Okay, I’ve now listened to the whole song once. It definitely flows well when set on repeat. I’ve heard a few songs that play with this “repeat me” idea — I think Charli XCX did something similar on her latest album.
The Black Keys just wrapped up a massive European tour with over 65,000 tickets sold. Their U.S. tour — which kicks off on August 9 — has already sold more than 80,000. They’re absolutely the kind of band you'd want to see live. They may be a duo, but they put on performances that feel full, dynamic, and globally loved.
Their next album, No Rain, No Flowers, is out August 8. I’ve worked on promoting this record before — but even so, I’m genuinely excited about the direction they’re heading. “On Repeat” might be a signal of a softer era, and I’m definitely here for it. The Black Keys continue to deliver with their signature musicality.
Go give their new track a listen.
