Review: Mind Loaded Blood Orange (feat. Lorde, Caroline Polachek & Mustafa)

This incredible lineup of artists has come together on a new track called “Mind Loaded.” Blood Orange is the main creative force here, and as always, he finds inventive ways to bring collaborators into his world. As a group, this collective feels remarkably versatile. Their musicality seems to resonate across different styles and sensibilities, which speaks volumes about their own artistic brilliance.

Mind Loaded is a truly wild track. It feels free, but not in the way that Born to Run by Bruce Springsteen might make you feel free, driving down an endless highway. The freedom here is in the form—the structure, or lack of it—and the looseness, the creative space the artists clearly allowed themselves. The track is full of intricate sections that shift and flow naturally. It’s as if the song doesn’t care whether or not you’re listening. It simply exists for itself.

The strongest presence I notice is Caroline Polachek. Her signature background vocals echo throughout the entire track. They’re unmistakably hers. As for Mustafa, I’m less familiar with his work, though I’ve seen him featured on other collaborations. He seems to be one of those rare artists who can elevate the energy of any project he’s part of.

When it comes to describing the structure or making sense of the song’s different parts, I’m honestly at a loss. This is one of those tracks you either get or you don’t. I think I kind of get it, but at the same time, I’m not sure when or where I’d actually find myself putting it on. That said, I still think it’s a great work of art, and I’d encourage everyone to listen and see if Mind Loaded has a place in their own playlists. Hats off to everyone involved.

Sounds like the “Zephyr Song” by RHCP which sounds like “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and all three songs invoke the same emotion in a way.
